From 18 June to 21 June 2013, a Technical Meeting on Regional Networks for Education in Nuclear Technology was held at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna, Austria. Representatives from thirteen countries and from regional networks from African Network for Education in Nuclear Science and Technology (AFRA-NEST), Asian Network for Education in Nuclear Technology (ANENT), Latin American Network for Education in Nuclear Technology (LANENT) and European Nuclear Education Network Association (ENEN) attended this meeting, along with the Nuclear Technology Education Consortium (NTEC), the Japanese Nuclear Human Resources Development Network (JN-HRD-Net) and the Nordic Academy for Nuclear Safety and Security (NANSS).
LANENT was represented by its President, Dr. Raúl Oscar Barrachina, and Dr. C. Arnaldo López Núñez from the Cuban Agency of Nuclear Energy and Advanced Nuclear Technologies.
The meeting paved the way to the information exchange on the experience of the different networks and countries and on their activities and current programmes. As well as this, presentations given by the representatives of other thematic networks portrayed the benefits of establishing fruitful relations between the educational networks and other networks and organizations.
Over the meeting, the action plans for particular thematic areas were dealt with and the outline and content of a document about “Strategic Considerations and Key Elements for Establishing and Operating Educational Regional Networks”. Finally, during the session of recapitulation, participants expressed to the networks and the IAEA several recommendations, such as, the creation of an educational material repository to be exchanged, support to the collaboration between regional and national nuclear education networks to be able to reach sustainability.
